Electronic Components and Semiconductor Manufacturing
The Indian electronics market is one of the largest in the world and is anticipated to reach US$ 400 billion by 2022. The market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 25% over the next few years. The electronics sector consists of consumer and industrial electronics, computers, communication and broadcasting equipment, strategic electronics and electronic components. Total production of electronics hardware goods in India is estimated to cross US$ 100 billion by 2020. The communication and broadcasting equipment segment constituted 31 per cent, which is the highest share of total production of electronic goods in India, followed by consumer electronics at 23 per cent.
The Government of India has increased liberalisation and relaxed tariffs to promote growth in the sector. The government aims to increase exports in the electronic system design and manufacturing sector from US$ 6 billion to US$ 80 billion by 2020. The growing customer base and the increased penetration in consumer durables segment has provided enough scope for the growth of the Indian electronics sector.
The Indian semiconductor industry offers high growth potential as the areas where semiconductors are extensively used are themselves high growth areas. Semiconductors find applications across a wide range of industries such as Mobile Devices, Telecommunications, Information Technology & Office Automation (IT & OA), Industrial, Automotive and other industries (Aerospace, Defense and Medical industries).
It is estimated that nearly 2,000 chips are being designed every year in India and more than 20,000 engineers are working on various aspects of chip design and verification. Over the years, the Indian semiconductor design industry has developed significant capabilities and currently works on state-of-the-art products. Growing technical competence combined with stringent IP protection environment and trend towards localisation of contents will help this segment continue to grow.
There are more than 120 companies in India focused on semiconductor design for global products. This industry has witnessed a robust growth of 17% over the last 5-6 years and today boasts of a 5.1 percent share of the global pie. According to the India Electronics & Semiconductor Association, the Indian electronic system design and manufacturing (ESDM) market will grow from US$ 94 to US$ 400 billion by 2020. According to a report the Indian semi conductor industry is estimated to grow from US$ 12 billion to US$ 53 billion in 2020 at CAGR of over 25%.
In recent years, many original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and integrated device manufacturers (IDMs) have invested in the Indian semiconductor industry.
The government expects investment proposals in electronics manufacturing to "more than double" in the next two years.
